The object of the game is to navigate one's game piece, according to die rolls, from the start (bottom square) to the finish (top square), helped or hindered by ladders and snakes respectively. The game is a simple race contest based on sheer luck, and is popular with young children. The game was popular in ancient India by the name Moksha Patam. It was also associated with traditional Hindu philosophy contrasting karma and kama, or destiny and desire. It emphasized destiny, as opposed to other games of that time which focused on a mixture of skill and luck. The most widely known edition of Snakes and Ladders in the United States is Chutes and Ladders released by Milton Bradley in 1943. If you stop by a ladder, you'll climb to it, and become closer to the finish line, but stopping by a slide or a snake will take you a few blocks back. Rolling a 6 will grant you another dice roll, so you can finish the game in few moves if you're lucky.
